Artist Darrel Austin

Darrel Austin’s “Woodchoppers,” painted in 1936, is showcased on the Mezzanine level of Timberline Lodge near the Ram’s Head Bar. Austin created at least 16 works for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the New Deal, and four of those are on display at Timberline. The colorful paintings are a highlight of any art-lover’s visit! Learn more about Darrel Austin and his body of work here ➡️https://tinyurl.com/Darrelaustin.

Timberline Newell Posts

The newell posts lining the stairwells at the Lodge were carved from recycled telephone poles bought in Portland for $2.10 each. These drawings by Portland sculptor Florence Thomas, as well as plaster molds she created for reference, were used by WPA carvers to create the 16 posts topped with different animals of the Northwest. Carving techniques were kept deliberately free and informal and, on many of the posts, the marks of the chisel are clearly visible. Some of the posts now have deep cracks and are rubbed smooth in high touch areas. A highlight of any Lodge visit, to be sure!
